“What Video Games Can Teach” Panel at Wizard World

April 2nd, 2014

Happy Badger Studio’s own Carol Mertz has been invited to speak at the Wizard World St. Louis event this coming weekend!

She will be joining a number of other industry professionals (both national and local) on Saturday afternoon’s panel, “What Video Games Can Teach” at 4pm in room 144.

Carol Mertz at Wizard World

Advocating for a learner-centered approach often brings up the question, “Won’t my kids just play video games all day?” Although the answer to that is multi-faceted, we know that no experience is devoid of learning. And, in fact, some may have more opportunities for development than we first believe. Join special guests Genese Davis (The Holder’s Dominion & MMORPG.com,) Eric Kieron (Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft,) Matt Raithel (Studio Director, Graphite Lab,) Carol Mertz (Happy Badger Studio,) and Sam Coster (Butterscotch Shenanigans) as they discuss the benefits and potential drawbacks to video games and how to navigate both. This high-powered panel will plunge into video game culture and its social development divulging how video games affect our lives and education. (ROOM 144)

Announcing “Hero Chomp”

April 1st, 2014

We were so inspired by our recent experience at GDC, and by watching our good friends Butterscotch Shenanigans create one-day “speedcrafting” games, that we decided to challenge ourselves and build a little game really quickly. Ben said something along the lines of, “wouldn’t it be cool if…” and we all said “YES!” in unison, and so Hero Chomp was born. The whole game was prototyped and finalized in 6 days, and we absolutely love how simple and challenging it is.

It’s available now for both Android and Kindle Fire, and is coming soon for iOS! Check it out and let us know what you think!

Happy Badgers at GDC

March 13th, 2014

A pack of Happy Badgers will be headed to this year’s Game Developer’s Conference in San Francisco. Our devices will be loaded with the latest versions of our in-dev games and we’re lookin’ to show them off. If you’d like to get together, set up a meeting to chat, play some Werewolf or SpaceTeam, or you just want to follow us around from session to session, please email or tweet at us to let us know!

We’d love to meet you, share what we’re working on, and see how we can help support and inspire each other — because isn’t that what GDC is all about?

Something Fragile at the Very Big Indie Pitch

January 17th, 2014

We have great news!

We’ve been invited to pitch our game, Something Fragile, at the Very Big Indie Pitch in London this year. Of thousands of entries, they selected ours to be among just a select few independent games to take the day pitching to industry veterans and journalists. At the end of the day, they will then choose three finalists to pitch again the next day. The overall winner will receive thousands of dollars in marketing incentives, which would be huge for Something Fragile and our little studio!

Wish us luck!
